How to organize wound-care supplies at home
A simple supply system reduces missed dressing changes and makes it easier to see what needs to be reordered.
Separate unopened products from used materials
Keep a written reorder list and supplier contact
Set up one clean area
The area should be easy to wipe down and used only for clean supplies during the dressing change.
- Hand hygiene supplies
- Current dressings and products named in the order
- Scissors or measuring tools if instructed
- Waste bags and sharps container when applicable
Prevent supply gaps
Check quantities before the last item is used.
- Write the product name, size and order number
- Know whether the supplier, facility or home health agency orders it
- Record the date of the next expected delivery
- Call the clinical team before substituting an unfamiliar product
Keep orders currentA supply cabinet should reflect the current treatment plan. Old products should not be added to the wound without clinical direction.
